Lessard SlumberFest 2008

OK I'm the first. Friday was a great time. Except for the fact that i slept in the same room as a human lawn mower. Angie you have my deepest sympathy if you have to endure that every night.

Well Scott and Marissa or her NY name RISSA arrived 2 hours after schedule. A delicious meal of chicken parm was consumed and then a riveting game of Bananagrams broke out. As Scoot explained in his blog Bananagrams is a form of scrabble, where the object is to make your own board and get rid of all your tiles. But the best part of the game is the yelling of moves. SPLIT, PEEL, DUMP, BANANAS. And if you're an outsider watching it looks like chaos.

Sat morning was a breakfast of bagels and listening to everyone saying. How are we getting there. What do we do w/ so and so's tickets. well how are THEY gonna get there? Then everyone left for the game to get autographs and see batting practice And i started my day of running around until i got to my friends wedding. Which i will tell you about later today.

18 months already?

Has it really been 18 months? It doesn't seem to be, Is it possible? Lets see carry the one and yeah 18 months exactly. What happened 18 months ago? and 18 months before that? and 18 months before that? Well 2 things.

2 things seem to happen to me every 18 months or so. I have to go job hunting and to a funeral of someone close to me. The reason for the funeral is obvious. The job hunting usually boils down to money. And that's the case this time.

First the job hunt, Although I am still working, I have to look b/c my income has changed from salary + commission, to just commission. I normally would not have a problem w/ that except, in this case my commissions don't get paid for over a month. So a change is definitely needed.

As for the funeral, I am sorry to say it was my great aunt Marie-Ange. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday, so she lived a very long and wonderful life. The only good thing about her passing is that I get see family that I haven't seen in years. In this case my Aunt Leona and Uncle Bobby from Canada, and my cousin Gary from NC. I can't remember the last time I saw them. But everytime I do its like we see each other all the time. If you want to laugh talk to Uncle Bobby for 2 minutes. He is a pisser. But this is exactly why I love my family. We can have a good time at a funeral.

In loving memory M'tant Marie Ange 4/21/13- 5/3/08

Why I love sports

Last week I wrote about why I love someone. That is gone now. Today I am gonna talk about my True love, my first, the one who may let me down but always comes back. Anyway everyone knows I am a SPORTS NUT and I have been watching them my whole life. But today i saw one of the best if not THE BEST moment in sports I have EVER seen. If its not the best "moment" its DEFINITELY the best show of sportsmanship.

If you told me last week that I would see a greater moment than the 1980 US Olympic Hockey win over the Soviet Union, I would have called you nuts. The Miracle on Ice, I don't care how many times I see it, when I hear Al Michaels perfect call "Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!!!" I get chills up and down my arms and legs, and tears in my eyes. Then I saw this picture last week

Courtesy of ESPN.com. Western Oregon's Sara Tucholsky is carried around the bases by Central Washington's Liz Wallace, left, and Mallory Holtman after injuring her knee following her home run during their softball game Saturday April 26, 2008, in Ellensburg, Wash. With two runners on base and a strike against her, Tucholsky uncorked her best swing and did something she had never done, in high school or college. Her first home run cleared the center-field fence.

This was a Division II college game that had zero significance in my life. I never heard of either of these schools, I don't root for either one, and I certainly don't know any of their players. But I won't forget this picture. These 2 teams were in the 2nd game of a double-header and battling for the conference title. With her team trailing by a run Western Oregon senior Sara Tucholsky hit the first and only home run of her career. In her haste rounding the bases she missed first and when she went back to touch the bag she twisted her knee and tore her ACL. As far as injuries go, that's it. A torn ACL means at least a year rehab. Her career would end clutching 1st base w/ a 2 run SINGLE. Because she didn't round the bases she would only get credit for a single and if any of HER teammates touched her to help her, she would be out. That's when 2 OPPONENTS went to the ump and asked if THEY carried her would that be legal? And that's exactly what they did. They lost the game b/c of that home run.

This is what sports is really all about. As I bet everyone was told when they were little, Its not weather you win or lose, its how you play the game. That's true until your about 10. Then its If it didn't matter who won or loss then why do you keep score. Don't get me wrong I am VERY competitive and I love to win. But there is a right way to win. And as my father taught me you have to leave everything on the field. That's what these girls did. And God Bless them for it.

With ALL the negativity in this world, especially in the sports world. "Who is on roids?" (CHEATING FUCKS!), A star player was arrested for rape/dog fighting/a shooting! (DUMB FUCKS!), Star athlete went to a strip club. (INVASION OF PRIVACY) There was a great episode of Costas Now on HBO dealing w/ the sports media. And just this problem, ALL THE NEGATIVITY. I am an optomistic person and I like hearing positive things but that is not the world we live in anymore. So when a story like this comes along it doesn't get the press it deserves. So I recommend everyone clicking on the link below and watch this incredible story,

Derby Day

Well despite the events of last night. Yesterday is usually one of my favorite days of the year. It is the Run for the Roses. I do not follow horse racing like I do other sports, but I love the Triple Crown Races (The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and The Belmont Stakes) This year's race was a rare moment in sports and in life for that matter, it lived up to its hype. The winning horse, Big Brown, the favorite showed why when he became the 1st horse since the 1920's to win from the 20th post. The Race also was marked by tragedy when the horse who came in 2nd, a phillie named Eight Belles, had to be put to sleep after the race b/c she broke both front ankles. Put this into perspective. This is like the Olympic silver medalist collapsing of of a heart attack while still on the track.

But the reason I put this post up is b/c The Kentucky Derby is more than a race its an event. And I said in my first post there are several things in my life that I would like to do and see. One of them is go to the Derby. This got me thinking about other sporting events or venues i would like to see live. so i compiled my top 10. There are some that would be very unlikely b/c of finance or they might not even happen.

10. A Small Conference College Tourney Chamionship Game (Winner goes Dancin)
9. A Montreal Canadiens home game
8. The Kentucky Derby
7. NHL Finals game 7 in Detroit
6. The Winter Olympics especially Gold Medal Hockey game
5. A Yankees- Red Sox game in Fenway Park (Complete w/ a #3 Yankee Jersey)
4. A Notre Dame Football Game
3. The Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend
2. Super Bowl
1. World Series game 7 @ Yankee Stadium

My friend Frankie and I have a deal. That if either one of us ever win the lottery. We would take a 2 month leave of absence from work and drive cross country visiting every Major League Stadium. So that is really the ultimate dream

Honorable Mention- A Cubs game at Wrigley Field, NCAA Final 4, NCAA Wrestling Tourney, Summer Olympics, Belmont Stakes w/ the Triple Crown on the line.

So what is your Sports Dream? Vote in the Poll to the right and leave a comment. But I want some form or realism, so lets keep the Mets winning a World Series or Jets Winning a Superbowl Pipe Dreams to yourself.
